We miss a lot, if as a group, we don’t take advantage of our opportunity to come together to explore creative ideas of how to leverage our relationships and this network to our mutual benefit.  Any and all topics are open for this, and this is how we improve what is possible here.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE OF THIS, and would appreciate your input if you are so inclined.

Recently the topic of consolidating shipments, for lower rates was raised.

In the interest of contributing, I want to share my experience in this area.
Many new members come to the network thinking about what on the surface might make sense.  They ask if the network could consolidate volumes and get lower rates.  Over our 15 years, we have looked at this several times, and actually tried something like this once upon a time.  The fact is, so have the carriers.  When we last looked at this we explored it with Vanguard (for LCL and FCL ocean discounts).   I approached them, but they told me this never works with Networks, that they had tried it several times.  Unfortunately this was my experience as well.

The assumption that a network is a tight group of operators is just not reality.  A non-exclusive or even an exclusive network, unless there is common ownership in all members, can’t possibly react unilaterally.   Everyone, and rightly so, is in the network for their own definitions of how it can help them.   We are much more of a loose confederation to members with common objectives, that come together to pursue those objectives, each, by themselves.

This is why I’ve shared with many of you that it seems that the highest use of a network in from a Sales and Business development standpoint (especially considering the above paragraph) and not an “Operational platform”. This is not to say it can’t bring value on an Operational basis, it might.  However, in most cases achieving Operational or rate benefits assumes a far tighter, far more monolithic form, than what is possible as a non-exclusive network of independents.

I sometimes am amazed at such networks that hold themselves out there as a major Operational Benefit.  Let me tell, I was there at the beginning of All World Shipping, the WCA NVO, and all they did was markup underlying carriers (such as Shipco) rates, without any real connection to the operation.   Let’s see, more cost and less operational control, what kind of model is that?

Doesn’t one have to stop and ask the question, how does a much loser association of companies that is not full time dedicated to this NVO activity, provide better benefits that those much larger organizations that are full time dedicated and invested in this activity?  Does the term, “smoke and mirrors” come up for anyone?

It is interesting possibly in exploring ways of operating with existing carriers and options and not necessarily trying to become a carrier.

One always has to check this against what is existing, how large would the benefit be versus the effort, and would that benefit or induce other members to enthusiastically participate?  It has to be in their interest.

I for one would love to be part of expanding what we do with each other as a network.   Console locations throughout the world might work.  But what we know for sure is that a majority of the membership would have to support it.

And for that, we must demonstrate VALUE to everyone.  If this is doable, I will do my best to communicate such value system wide and support it as best we possibly can.
